How Algae Sensors Work: Principles and Practice in Water Quality Monitoring Webinar

The Cleveland Water Alliance and YSI, a Xylem brand, are proud to offer a FREE educational webinar series on sensing technologies for everyone working with water quality monitoring, from students and undergraduates to professionals.

The first webinar will be taking place on June 11 and will be covering Algae Sensors.

With limited means for prevention and mitigation of harmful algal blooms in source waters, early detection via in situ monitoring provides the opportunity to plan a response.

Highlights of the webinar:

• Who monitors for algae and why
• The evolution of pigment-based detection of algae, from invitro to in vivo
• The underlying principles of how field-deployable algae sensors work
• Real-world practice to demonstrate both the value and limitations of sensors, so that early detection programs are most effective

Dr. Stephanie A. Smith - YSI Product Segment Manager, has worked with blue-green and other algae for 20 years, starting with her doctoral program at The Ohio State University, and including her own business that makes high-value products from blue-green algae. At Xylem she manages the Outdoor Water Quality product line, which includes YSI’s Total Algae (TAL) sensors. Dr. Smith has used or evaluated numerous algae-monitoring technologies throughout the course of her career, ranging from laboratory-based extractions of pigments and toxins to in situ sensing of pigments for early detection of harmful algal blooms.
