G418/ Geneticin® is an antibiotic that belongs to the aminoglycoside family. This antibiotic is very similar in structure to Gentamicin B1 and can be used for selection in genetically engineered eukaryotic cells expressing the neomycin resistance gene. G418 is produced by micromospora rhodorangea through fermentation processes and works by blocking polypeptide synthesis by preventing the elongation step. This antibiotic is toxic to bacteria, yeast, protozoans, higher plant, and mammalian cells.
